Kivulini is Maine's only Afro-yoga and donation-based Studio inspired to take action by the lack of representation of people of color in yoga spaces and outdoor adventures.
The Kiswahili word Kivulini means "in the shade." It implies a place of safety and relaxation.
The Studio is operated by immigrants and people of color to bring the transformational power of yoga to one another and anyone who wishes to practice with us.
Our approach is to celebrate the diversity and unique history of a new generation of yoga and afro dance, mixing traditional and modern styles.
We welcome people of any race, gender identity or expression, ethnicity, size, nationality, or sexual orientation in our space; we offer multilingual classes by donation (suggested $10-$30).
Here, we free ourselves from diktats and prejudices: no need to be flexible, purist, or pro of introspection to practice.
An Afroyoga session is both soothing and energizing! Blow, control, relax, sweat, meditate... Effort and relaxation go hand in hand during the session.
In the spirit of UBUNTU, the humanity toward others or "I am because we are," we appreciate every support given with love and compassion toward our work.
You don't have to take a class with us to support our cause; you can donate below or book a class for a friend and family.
Thank you for choosing us.
We are Maine's only Afro yoga studio. Our classes are inspiring vinyasa flow challenging all levels, set to your favorite Afro tunes + Hip Hop tunes. While classes are moderately heated, sweat will drip as you power through several postures to lengthen, strengthen, and tone muscles. Come prepared to have fun, get playful, build community, and move to the beat, however suitable for you.
The classes are slow and designed to open the body to connect with mind, body, and spirit through stillness, meditation, movement, breath work, and whatever else you choose in your class, using studio-provided props as necessary.
These classes are offered in a warm, quiet room and are ideal for everyone, especially for people new to yoga.
We believe yoga should be available to everybody, so we offer classes by donation. You can drop into the studio without signing up ahead of time and donate whatever feels right to you. Our space is small, so we encourage ahead-of-time reservations if you plan to practice. As a donation-based studio, reciprocity acts as the basis for how we exchange value. Reciprocity means that if our intentions benefit even one other person, we, too, will reap a benefit.
We love our Visitors, so feel free to visit during regular business hours.
